We are located 800 metres south of the Pan-American Highway at Kilometre 40, close to the village of Sumpango. This is halfway between San Lucas and Chimaltenango, and is the junction with the road to Santo Domingo Xenacoj. The local area is known as Pachaj.
It’s approximately a 45-minute bus ride from Antigua, costing, as of early 2008, 8 quetzales (about US$1) (Antigua – San Lucas Q5; San Lucas – Km 40 Q3). Take any bus going from Antigua to Guatemala City and get off at the first gasoline station in San Lucas. Cross the road and take any bus going to Chimaltenango. Ask to be let off at Km 40 (Kilometro Cuarenta), where you need to cross to the south side of the road (there’s a footbridge).
At the bottom of the footbridge you will see the start of a dirt road which is leading uphill. Continue walking 800 metres straight up the hill. Just past another road that joins from the left you will come to a green metal gate with a sign saying AWARE. Go through the gate and continue up the lane until you get to another gate and the barking dogs.You have arrived!!
